I am a student of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. I posed the weight loss question to one of my instructors and here (very roughly paraphrased) is what he told me:
Acupuncture will not, per se, cause weight loss. That is, there is no way to magically melt off weight. However, acupuncture CAN calm the nerves (from stress, etc.) that may be triggers for overeating. Also, relaxed people better digest food--which may mean the patient will not feel the urge to eat too much (the body now knows it is getting enough)--and produce less stress hormones (e.g. cortisol) that contribute to weight gain. We can also stimulate the digestion (see above) and help move lymph to improve drainage of fluids, which reduces water retention weight. Additionally, if someone has an addictive eating disorder, standard "addiction protocols" might reduce that craving as well--but the treatments would have to be quite frequent (daily at first, then reducing over time) and the psychological issues that lead to the addiction in the first place would still have to be dealt with.
Bottom line, acupuncture can HELP, but it isn't magic. Proper nutrition and regular exercise would still need to be a big part (the biggest, actually) of the plan.
