The BIG news from one of the world’s biggest weight management programmes - Weight Watchers - is that it has announced an overhaul of its eating plan – the first such change for over a decade.
Weight Watchers recently stunned millions of followers with its announcement that all fruits and most vegetables were points-free on its new programme, PointsPlus. For those of us who have painstakingly counted our daily points (sometimes under immense pressure!), this is probably excellent news . A ‘free’ food is manna from heaven in a dieter’s eyes – and the thought of filling up on a delicious zero point banana or juicy mango is a real bonus.
The changes followed years of research and testing into how the body processes different foods. Under the PointsPlus system, points are allocated to foods according to their breakdown of fibre, fat, carbohydrate and protein and aims at helping people choose food that will keep them fulfilled for longer. Fresh and raw foods are always encouraged, and a daily serving of two fresh fruits and five vegetables is a global benchmark for healthy eating .
Vegetables and fresh fruit are not only healthy and provide a sustained energy release, they are also a fantastic source of fibre which protects bodies against a range of health problems such as diabetes, high cholesterol and even some kind of cancers.
But hang on a sec...before you ditch the bag of popcorn for the bag of dried apricots, remember that dried fruit and fruit juice contain far more sugars than fresh fruit, so they have points allocated to them as do some fresh vegetables like corn and potatoes.
